Cricket News:- Sri Lanka vs South Africa 1st Test – Session times, teams and live stream

The Proteas return to action on Thursday when they square up against Sri Lanka in the first of two Test matches in Galle.

With ball-tampering having once again reared its ugly head, the hosts go into the series under a cloud of controversy, with skipper Dinesh Chandimal likely to not play a part in the series after admitting to breaching the ICC’s code of conduct during the drawn Test series against the West Indies last month.

Despite this, he has been named in Sri Lanka’s 16-man squad, pending the result of a hearing due to be held on Tuesday.

Chandimal is, however, not the only player whose availability the hosts are sweating over, as veteran spinner Rangana Herath and batsman, Kusal Perera have been pencilled into the squad, both subject to fitness.

South Africa, on the other hand, have a colossal absentee in their ranks, in the form of AB de Villiers, who recently announced his retirement from all international cricket, but will be boosted by the return of speedster, Dale Steyn who is back to full fitness after missing out on most of the Test series against India and the subsequent series victory against Australia.

However, captain Faf du Plessis might have to rely less on his quick men and more on his spinners, as the conditions in Galle may just suit the slower men.

Included in the squad for the first time is Titans leg-spinner, Shaun von Berg, who had an indifferent outing in the once-off warm-up game against the Sri Lanka Board XI, going at five an over for a return of 2/82.

His Titans teammate, Tabraiz Shamsi, however, put his hand up for selection as he posed problems for the opposition, grabbing 5/45 in 13 overs.

Along with incumbent Keshav Maharaj, Shamsi could form part of a bowling attack likely to feature more than one specialist spinner.
